Mamma Mia che freddo...in Italian means Mamma Mia is too cold...
I left London few days ago expecting to fine a nice warm weather back in motherland to enjoy the festive spirit. In Italy we do celebrate Christmas Festivities with long meals accompanied by a lot of grapefruit juice which could be red or white.
The beauty of it is that you can still enjoy the lovely home made pasta and the rest of it, if you refrain from the grapefruit because your second wife,or you second girlfriend is calling you to take her into the wild and beauty of the Apennines.
The cities and town along the Via Emilia, going south from Bologna are all beautiful places to use a base for your cycling holiday and cycling races. You can stay in Bologna, famous for various things like the University and much more including the "Dieci Colli" part of the Prestigio Circuit. You can also stay in Imola, famous for the old Formula 1 race track, where at the end of April will be the home of "Over The Hills" a 3 day cycling event with Bike Expo,Bike Races, Bike Test.
Then along the way you find Faenza, world famous for the ceramics and home base of Toro Rosso Formula 1, the famous "Granfondo CIme di Romagna" and much more for you to discover from great history, art and food culture.
All of this towns are a quite short distance from Cesenatico, home town of the "Pirate' Marco Pantani, on the adriatic coast where you can enjoy the seaside and the Italian Riviera. Also in Cesenatico is the start and finish of the "Nove Colli".
Not far from those places you have the Republic of San Marino, great for cycling and History. Rimini, Riccione, Cattolica, Gabicce they are also very close and great for vacations for any time of the year for a long weekend or a week long holiday.
There is also the chance to enjoy more the Tosco-Emiliano Romagnolo Apennines in depth, staying in a Wine Estate farm house (my favourite is La Sabbiona) where you can taste really good food and wine.
For the wifes and girlfriend the chance to pamper themself. You might enjoy the chance to swim in rivers within the hills. A short riding distance form this locations you find Marche and Tuscany.
